Broadcasting Across the World

From Sept. 13-16, 2024, Michigan State University Visiting International Professional Program hosted 22 international broadcast journalists, producers, editors, anchors and media managers as part of the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists. This International Visitor Leadership Program was a collaborative effort between ComArtSci and VIPP.

To kick off the program VIPP held a tailgate for the Spartans first home game against Prairie View A&M where MSU mounted a 40-0 victory.

Participants then engaged with U.S. broadcasting practices through a series of workshops and discussions. Bob Gould led an interactive workshop on traditional and new media journalism.

Eric Freedman moderated a panel for the participants which featured ComArtSci faculty Winson Peng, Anastasia Kononova, Maria Molina and Dan Hiaeshutter-Rice. The panel dove into the use of large language models in broadcasting.

ComArtSci Dean Heidi Hennink-Kaminski welcomed the participants at a networking luncheon, where she encouraged them to share their international perspectives on journalism and media leadership.

The visit ended with a guided tour of WKAR, providing a behind-the-scenes look at public broadcasting operations.
