Voices from The Past: Civil Rights Living Wax Museum Competition Rules

Entry Criteria

  • Entrants must be an MSU student
  • No group entries
  • Only one entry is allowed per student
  • Submissions must include a live video of the entrant performing as their chosen figure.
  • The figure portrayed must be connected to the Civil Rights era (leader, activist, or another influential figure). Unsure which figure you would like to represent? Please see, Civil Rights Leaders and Activists Suggestion List
  • Only video submissions will be accepted and should be no longer than 55 seconds (see last year's winners below)

Deadline: Monday, February 14th, 2022 at 11:59 PM

Judging Criteria

  • accuracy of character representation 
  • historical connections and significance
  • delivery of a modern-day call to action
  • creativity, performance, and execution

Instructions to enter and submit your video

  • The video should be recorded in landscape/horizontal orientation in .mp4 or .mov format
  • Complete the entry form here and upload your video to Dropbox (link provided on entry form) with the file name: yourfullname_nameofyourfigure  (e.g., AshleySpartan_AngelaDavis)

Prizes!*

  • Dean's Choice Award (selected by a panel of ComArtSci Faculty & Staff): $1000
  • ComArtSci DEI Committee's Choice Award: $750
  • Call to Action Award (selected by the Social Justice Art Festival Committee): $500
  • Fan Favorite Award (determined by social media engagement. The submission with the most likes and unique comments.): $500

No more than one award will be awarded to each entry. 

Prizes will be awarded in the form of scholarships. 

Word of Caution

ComArtSci DEI reserves the right to exclude from the competition any entry whose character representation is deemed vulgar, inappropriate, or offensive. Any video considered inappropriate or offensive by the contest committee—in its sole discretion— may be deemed inadmissible and disqualified. This applies to imagery, costumes, dialogue, or music that might contain material that is offensive to persons of any ethnic, racial, religious, gender, or sexual orientation. Moreover, race is not a costume. Under no circumstances— regardless of the racial group you identify with — should you paint your face or any of your extremities black, brown, yellow, or red to signify any ethnic group as part of your performance.

Final note: Only completed entries will be accepted. By entering this contest you are granting ComArtSci DEI the right to upload videos submitted through this process to its Instagram, Facebook, and ComArtSci web pages, using your name, major, and class level.
