How MSU is teaching students to spot misinformation

Story adapted from an article originally shared through MSUToday.

Faculty in the Department of Communication and Advertising and Public Relations are helping students build media literacy skills to better navigate today’s fast-moving and often misleading information landscape. Through their teaching and research, Dustin Carnahan, associate professor in the Department of Communication, and Maria D. Molina, assistant professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, emphasize the importance of verifying information, consulting multiple sources and applying thoughtful skepticism—particularly as artificial intelligence and social media accelerate the spread of misinformation. Rather than promoting blanket distrust, Carnahan and Molina encourage students to critically evaluate content and take time to assess credibility, equipping them with practical strategies to identify reliable information and make informed decisions as media consumers.
