The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University is pleased to announce the third annual Stockman Symposium. The symposium is open to all attendees, free of charge!

This year’s topic is, The Disorder within Dialects Framework: Transforming Practice and Pedagogy.

The Disorder within Dialects Framework: Transforming Practice and Pedagogy

Description: This course will present the rationale, supporting data, and implications of the Disorder within Dialects framework, with a focus on clinical practice and pre-professional pedagogy. Materials will be shared along with explanations about why they are dialect appropriate, illustrate strategic scoring, and demonstrate the clinical utility of dialect discovery worksheets with child data.

Learning Objectives: Participants who complete the course will be able to:

  1. Describe the Disorder within Dialects Framework.
  2. Summarize the benefits of using clinical materials that are dialect appropriate and sensitive to language environment.
  3. Explain how to incorporate information about the Disorder within Dialects Framework into clinical practice.

Bio: Janna is an Associate Vice President in the Office of Research and Economic Development and Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics at Louisiana State University. She also directs the D4 Child Language Lab, which supports research on language Development and Disorders across Dialects of English to reduce Disparities in health and education among children. Her work has been funded by numerous agencies, including the National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, LA Department of Health, and the American Speech Language Hearing Foundation. She also has helped secure funding for graduate students from the National Institutes of Health, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, and the Southern Regional Education Board, and she has served as a mentor to undergraduate students as part of various programs. Janna is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has served as Editor and Associated Editor of Language for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. She is also a Fellow of the Louisiana Speech-Language-Hearing Association and served as Vice President and President of this organization in 2001 and 2002.

The funds for the studies to be reviewed have come from multiple NIH grants (R01DC009811; R01DC020434) awarded to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Louisiana State University.

Panelists:

Diane Katakowski, M.A., CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist for the Oakland Schools Intermediate School District. In addition, she serves as the Vice-President for SLP Public Schools for the Michigan Speech Language Hearing Association.

Jamie McClure, M.A., CCC-SLP currently works as a speech-language pathologist for University Prep Schools, providing services to elementary, middle, and high school students in one of Detroit, Michigan’s oldest charter schools.

Satisfactory Course Completion Requirements

Learners must complete the following in order to obtain continuing education units.

  1. Attend the course in full as reflected in check-in and check-out Qualtrics surveys with timestamps.
  2. Submission of a post-course reflection statement regarding three take-aways from the presentation that can be applied to their work-related activities, or that have advanced their learning on the topic. Qualtrics survey will be available for 24 hours after the course completion to submit the reflection.
