The Department of Communication's Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Department of Communication is fully committed to the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are dedicated to recognizing and celebrating many forms of diversity in our students, our instruction, our research, and our faculty and staff.

We in the Department of Communication recognize that unjust murders, harassment, and bullying of numerous people of color and LGBTQ communities call for change—in the United States, but also all over the world. We acknowledge that these events are not new or unique; rather they highlight systemic racism and prejudice that has long been perpetuated in American society and in academia. Additionally, implicit and explicit biases are commonly perpetrated against people on the basis of who they love, also with deadly or violent results. Likewise, the #metoo movement, harassment and mistreatment of immigrants, stigmatization of Asians during the Covid-19 pandemic, and countless other examples bring forward a call to action to the department. These events are combined with events on MSU's campus that highlight sexual assault, racial biases, biases based on sexual orientation or gender identity, sexism, and insensitivity.

We acknowledge with great humility the role we play as instructors and campus leaders in this system. We commit ourselves to examining our practices, in and out of the classroom, and policies for implicit or explicit biases. We see this as a long-term commitment resulting in actionable steps. We commit to inclusive practices that foster a sense of belongingness for all members of our community. As we listen to and learn from diverse voices, we will deepen these commitments
