Bio

Chuqing Dong is an Assistant Professor of Advertising + Public Relations. Her research focuses on corporate social responsibility (CSR), ESG (Environment, Social, Governance), government communication, and public relations practices in the AI era. Drawing on interdisciplinary theories and using a multimethod approach, her research agenda is shaped by inquiries such as 1) the effects and effectiveness of CSR/ESG communications in the digital media environment, enabled by AI, and within a global context; 2) strategic CSR alliances between NPOs and corporations and their impacts on the allies, publics, and the society; and 3) ethical and caring PR for organizations in both private and public sectors.

Dr. Dong's has produced more than 30 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and books, including Public Relations Review (PRR), Journal of Public Relations Research (JPRR)Journal of Business Ethics, International Journal of Business Communication, and Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. Dr. Dong's work has been recognized by multiple top paper awards at national and international conferences, such as the International Communication Association (ICA), Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), National Communication Association (NCA), and the International Public Relations Research Conference (IPRRC). Additionally, Dr. Dong is a member of the editorial boards for leading journals in the fields of public relations and organizational communication, including PRR, JPRR, and Management Communication Quarterly

Dr. Dong's research projects have been funded by multiple internal and external grants, such as the C.R. Anderson Foundation (2000), the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) (2021), and the Arthur W. Page Center (2022, 2024). These projects investigate dialogic communication and legitimacy in the oil & gas industry's CSR/ sustainability communication, employees' CSR engagement, ethics of care in government public relations, and DEI ethics training in the workplace. In 2024, Dr. Dong earned the ESG Investing certificate from the CFA Institute. 

Before joining MSU, Dr. Dong earned her Ph.D. from the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. She also received a master's degree in Public Policy (M.P.P.) and an M.A. in Professional Strategic Communication from the University of Minnesota. 

Dr. Dong welcomes the opportunities to work with graduate and undergraduate students on various topics related to international CSR/ESG communication, ethical consumerism, and public relations.
