2023

  • Ricardo Guimaraes has been accepted as an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America. This is an association dedicated to the preservation of representational art (realistic paintings) and membership is not guaranteed - members must undergo a rigorous evaluation of the technical and artistic quality of their works.
  • Casey O'Donnell won the Fulbright U.S. Scholar award for 2023-24.
  • Robby Ratan is a recipient of this year's AT&T Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award. The 2023 AT&T Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the use and development of information technology for teaching and learning in credit-bearing courses at Michigan State University.
  • Megh Marathe received a Faculty Seed Grant from the MSU Consortium for Sexual and Gender Minority Health.
  • Jeremy Bond was granted a 2023 Erskine Fellowship to help the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand expand and improve their game development program.
  • Drs. Susan Wyche and Jonathan Choti (MSU's Dept. of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures) won a $150,000 award from the Mozilla Foundation, as a part of their Responsible Computing Challenge program. They will redesign MSU's Information Communication Technology and Development (ICTD) course/curriculum to center African perspectives and develop a syllabus that will encourage students from different disciplines to learn how African history, Black Feminist Studies, Decolonial Theory, ethics, multilingualism, and other diverse topics can be applied to technology design. The award will also fund a novel "Technologists-in-Residence" program that will support students from Kenya’s Egerton University to participate in the course.
  • Dr. Johannes M. Bauer has been named as Chief Economist for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Read more.

  • Casey O'Donnell and Affinity Games' Creative Dying Card Game was been accepted as a Nominee in the Tabletop Award category for the 2022 IndieCade Anywhere and Everywhere Festival.
  • David Ewoldsen was named the new editor of the Journal of Communication.
  • Keith Hampton was honored with the William F. Ogburn Career Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association's section on Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology.
  • Keith Hampton received the Best Paper award at the annual Social Media & Society conference (#SMSociety) for his paper on "Excessive Social Media Use is Less Harmful than Disconnection for the Self Esteem of Rural Adolescents".
  • The Quello Center and Merit Network are joint recipients of a $10.5 million National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Broadband Infrastructure Program Grant that will connect Michigan’s many disparate Internet pathways.
  • The Flora, a game created by Affinity Games, which includes Casey O'Donnell, won an Honorable Mention for the Indiecade 2022 Climate Jam Awards.
  • Keith Hampton was honored with a 2022 ComArtSci Brandt Fellowship for Faculty Excellence.
  • Ryan Thompson won the ASMSU Outstanding Senior Class and Faculty Outstanding Community Service Award
  • The work of the Games for Entertainment & Learning Lab (GEL) and Brian Winn are part of a new display in the MSU Museum.
  • The Quello Center was able to secure a $120,000 research gift to resource a follow-up study to the 2019-2020 project led by Keith Hampton on broadband and K-12 educational achievements, student self-esteem, and broader social outcomes. The funds will support a second wave of data collection during the spring of 2022 and the analysis of the findings during 2022-2023.
  • Susan Wyche earned the John K. Hudzik Emerging Leader in Advancing International Studies and Programs Award, part of the 2022 International Awards, presented by MSU International Studies and Programs.
  • Dr. Robby Ratan received $75,000 from Meta (Facebook) to study inclusion and accessibility in VR.
  • Nick Kwiatkowski received the IAUG President's Award from the International Avaya User Group (IAUG), one of the world's largest international organizations for communications technology professionals.
  • Johannes M. Bauer has been appointed as the MSU Representative to the Ingham County Broadband Task Force, established to provide advice and guidance on broadband buildout to the Ingham County Government.

2021

  • Keith N. Hampton, Johannes M. Bauer and their community partners, Merit Network, Inc., Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District, Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District, St. Clair County Regional Educational Service Agency, Washtenaw County, Michigan, and Southwest Michigan Planning Commission are the recipients of the 2022 University Outreach and Engagement Distinguished Partnership Award for Community-Engaged Service! They are recognized for their research on social effects of discrepancies and inequalities of broadband connectivity on K-12 students and the sustained efforts that are benefiting residents in the partner communities.
  • Jean Hardy received a Computing Innovation Fellows grant from the NSF with Anne Jonas (UC Berkeley iSchool) to bring her here for a two-year postdoc starting January 2022.
  • Susan Wyche received a $15,000 gift from Google's exploreCSR program. These awards support initiatives to increase the number of students from historically marginalized groups to pursue research careers in computing.
  • Young Anna Argyris is a recipient of a 2021 Diversity Research Network’s Launch Award ($4,500) for the project entitled, “Development of a Machine-Learning Algorithm for Identifying Topics of Pro- and Anti-Vaccine Rhetoric on Social Media.” This project involves the development of a new machine-learning technique for accurately identifying prominent topics discussed on social media, thereby facilitating understanding of underserved populations’ health discussions.
  • The Center for Inclusive Excellence has awarded a grant to Dr. Kate Birdsall (PI) and Dr. Elizabeth LaPensée (Co-PI) for "Putting DEI to Work in Communities: The Cube." Dr. LaPensée's component of the project focuses on a website and online community building for Indigenous Game Devs, a network of Indigenous game developers.
  • A piece of legislation Jean Hardy advised on was introduced in the Michigan State Senate recently, to establish a new Office of Rural Development.
  • Robby Ratan (PI) and Adam Liszkiewicz (co-PI) were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for their four-year project, "FW-HTF-R: Collaborative Research: Virtual Meeting Support for Enhanced Well-Being and Equity for Game Developers," as part of the NSF's Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier program. The project includes $1,599,851 in support ($1,188,386 to MSU, $411,465K to co-PI collaborators' institutions).
  • Hee Rin Lee received funding and is the P.I. for a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS): AI & Co-design in public libraries: Empowering underserved youth to cultivate symbiotic relationships between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their communities.
  • Young Anna Argyris (PI), Pang-Ning Tan (CSE, MPI), Mike Stern (Co-I), Jiying Ling (RN, Nursing, Co-I), Robert Jacobson (MD, Consultant, Mayo Clinic), and Nada Ganesh (Consultant, NORC at the University of Chicago) received an R21 grant from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. The funded project, “Development of a vaccine informatics system and its application to identifying the impact of vaccine debate on immunization rates during a global pandemic,” involves the development of a deep-learning algorithm to detect vaccine misinformation and the administration of a national survey to identify the impact of parents’ engagement with this misinformation on their children’s uptake rates for HPV and Covid-19 vaccines.
  • Wei Peng is one of two recipients of the Brandt Fellowship for Faculty Excellence!
  • Co-PIs Beth LaPensee and Mary Hermes (University of Minnesota) were awarded a Spencer Foundation Large Research Grant for "Reclaiming Land and Languages Through Indigenous Community-Based Mobile Game Design."
  • Alumnus Peter Burroughs won the Blizzard World of Warcraft Student Art Contest. The prizes include a summer internship with them. Peter's Artstation.

2020

  • Elizabeth LaPensée joined the 2020 class of honorees to the Women in Games Hall of Fame.
  • Young Anna Argyris (along with Research Ethics Sub-committee at CAS) received 2020-2021 Creating Inclusive Excellence Grant funding for Enhancing Inclusive Excellence in Student Research Participation in the amount of $13,375.00 for one year.
  • Jeremy Bond's book, "Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development", has sold 16,280 copies (816 sold in the latter half of 2020). The third edition of the book will be released this summer. As of 3/18/2020, his Coursera Specialization "Unity Certified Programmer Exam Preparation" has had 22,726 total learners across all four courses within the specialization.
  • Michael Stern and Valeta Wensloff have been awarded part of a federal contract to help with usability testing for the MI COVID ALERT: Exposure Notification System Pilot phone app in conjunction with the Department of Communication and the State of Michigan. This app will roll out first to MSU students, then state-wide.
  • Beth LaPensée was inducted into the Women in Games Hall of Fame during the Global Games Awards 2020.
  • Rick Wash won the 2020 SOUPS Impact Award for long-term impact on usable privacy and security research and practice for his 2010 paper "Folk Models of Home Computer Security." The award is given out once every 3 years at SOUPS by a distinguished committee of peers.
  • Emilee Rader, Samantha Hautea, and Anjali Munasinghe won the IAPP Best Privacy Paper award at the SOUPS conference (Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security) for their paper '"I Have a Narrow Thought Process": Constraints on Explanations Connecting Inferences and Self-Perceptions
  • Rola Nashef's film, Detroit Unleaded, was named one of "50 Essential Films Shot in Michigan" by the Detroit Free Press.
  • Pang-Ning Tan (Professor in Computer Science and Engineering) and Young Anna Argyis were awarded the S3 grant for their collaborative research on “Humans-in-the-Loop Development of Rapid Intelligent Misinformation Detection System Using Artificial Intelligence to Prevent Outbreaks of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases” in the amount of $10,000.
  • Shelia Cotten is part of a team awarded a 1.7 million dollar contract from the state of Michigan as part of the NAIAS Michigan Mobility Challenge.
  • The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded the Stamps Gallery in downtown Ann Arbor $80,000 for exhibitions, programs, and publications dedicated to exploring inclusive, equitable futures through the lens of contemporary art practice, including an exhibition featuring work by Elizabeth LaPensée. 

2019

  • Andrew Dennis, whose VR project, Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy Care: Virtual Reality Training for Health Professionals, received $9,900 from the Trifecta Initiative Facilitating Funds Award to pursue an R25 grant.
  • Anna Young Argyris, who is a 2019 recipient of the Diversity Research Network Launch Awards Program (LAP). She will receive $4980 for the project.
  • nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, a documentary by Dr. Tasha Hubbard regarding the loss of Colten Boushie, with animations illustrated by Elizabeth LaPensee, received both the Sun Jury Award and the Audience Choice Award for Feature Film at imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival 2019, the leading International Indigenous media festival.
  • Rola Nashef was awarded the Knight Arts Foundations' Knight Arts Challenge Award for $125,000 to amplify the stories of Arab-America through the development of Arab-American themed films and TV shows.
  • Elizabeth LaPensee - Dialect, a game about the loss of language, which Beth LaPensee contributed to as a writer, received the Tabletop Award at IndieCade Europe 2019 in Paris, France.
  • Elizabeth LaPensee: When Rivers Were Trails, developed in collaboration with the Indian Land Tenure Foundation and the Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab, won the Adaptation award at IndieCade, the International Festival of Independent Games, for conveying Indigenous experiences through "the logic of play and power of interaction."
  • Shelia Cotten (PI), Liz Mack (Geography), Daisy Chang (Psychology), Kevin Ford (Psychology), Pete Savolainen (Engineering) and John Verboncoeur (Engineering) and Troy Hale (Journalism) were awarded an approximately 2.5 million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation for a study on workforce impacts of automated vehicles (see more information). This study builds off an earlier study with The American Center for Mobility that Shelia, Aleks Yankelevich, and John Verboncoeur conducted.
  • Elizabeth LaPensee (M+I), Geri Alumit Zeldes (School of Journalism), Fashina Aladé (Ad+PR), and Andrew Dennis (M+I) were awarded $20,000 from the Creating Inclusive Excellence Grant to continue the Emphatic Games Design Initiative, which supports students in developing their own self-determined games aimed at facilitating empathy.
  • A team including researchers from Arizona State University and a group of faculty from MSU, including Tom Holt (Criminal Justice), Arun Ross (CSE), Ruth Shillair and Johannes M. Bauer (M+I) received a Department of Homeland Security grant ($248,000 to the MSU team) for a project examining ideologically motivated cyberattackers.
  • Brian Winn is a co-PI with Michael Boivin (lead PI, Professor of Psychiatry and of Neurology & Ophthalmology), Alla Sikorskii (PI, Professor in Psychiatry), and Itziar Familiar-Lopex (PI, Professor in Psychiatry) on a large, $3,23 million NIH grant on Culture–specific neurodevelopmental assessment of HIV-affected children. This five-year grant is a continuation of the African Brain Powered Games (BPG) work. The team had been pursuing it for five years (so: persistence matters!). Aided by NIH funding, the team has developed in earlier work an open access African BPG, a non-proprietary CCRT digital games package for HIV+ and affected school-age children living in the sub-Sahara. The new project will explore how BPG can be both an intervention and an assessment. The research team will use BPG as a neurocognitive “stress test” or medical “challenge” test, in order to evaluate brain/behavior functional integrity in HIV-affected children. This dual use of BPG is a key innovative feature.
  • Josh Introne was recently awarded a $495,000 CHS Small NSF grant studying the “Online Dynamics of Misinformation”, see the award website.
  • Shelia Cotten is part of two teams that have each been awarded $10,000 grants by S3 (Science + Society @ State). The first project, Technostress and the Health of Working Older Adults, will fund work in collaboration with Elizabeth Mack and Amber Pearson (both Department of Geography at MSU). The second project, A qualitative exploration of media and information/communication technology use of older adults with and without cognitive impairment and dementia, is in collaboration with Anastasia Kononova (AD+PR), Andrew Bender (Epidemiology and Biostatistics), Dar Meshi (AD+PR), Fei Sun (School of Social Work), Andrea Bozoki (Neurology and Ophthalmology).
  • Rick Wash is among seven researchers who received a Security and Privacy research award from Google. The $75,000 award recognizes academics who have made major contributions to the field. Award winners were selected by a committee of senior security and privacy researchers at Google. See the website for the formal announcement.
  • Elizabeth LaPensée. nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, with animations illustrated by Beth, was awarded the Best Canadian Feature Documentary Award at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Directed by award-winning Cree filmmaker Tasha Hubbard, We Will Stand Up weaves the murder of Colten Boushie with the history of systematic violence against Indigenous people in the Prairies. Notably, this was also the first Indigenous film to open for Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival that reaches an audience of more than 200,000.
  • Amol Pavangadkar, who received one of the 2019 #ITeachMSU Awards, recognizing him as an educator who is positively contributing to the teaching and learning mission of Michigan State University! Awards are based on student nominations and were presented by Provost June Youatt at the Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology.
  • The Quello Center, which received the 2019 Merit Innovation Award at a conference in Dearborn, MI for original research contributions to the Michigan Moonshot Project. The Quello Team, led by Co-PIs Johannes M. Bauer, Laleah Fernandez, and Keith Hampton, developed a multi-faceted approach to increase our understanding of the quality of broadband connectivity and its effects on school performance. This is the first study to combine crowd-sourced network data with survey data, administered initially in 202 classrooms in three intermediate school districts across Michigan. Based on the lessons from the pilot phase, the team, working with Merit Network and MLab, plans to scale the project across the state and beyond.
  • Jon Whiting, who worked on the production of "Spartan Marching Band - Answer The Call", which won the 2019 Communicator Award of Distinction, Category: Online Video for Social Video
  • Carleen Hsu and John Valadez, who received a $50,000 grant from Latino Public Broadcasting to continue work on the American Exile project. The documentary is scheduled to be launched nationally in the fall of 2019.
  • MSU won the College Television: Station of the Year Award in the MAB Student Awards category. This is a noticeable win, as Central Michigan University has captured that award in the recent past. The work of students and faculty on the new MSUTV Channel was instrumental in that accomplishment. Thanks to Troy Hale, Bob Gould, Brian Kusch and others who worked with our students to make this happen!
  • The MSU Game Studies Guild, which was started in part thanks to the Inclusive Game Dev Initiative started by Elizabeth LaPensee with support from a Creating Inclusive Excellence grant, was featured in the State News.

2018

  • Ricardo Guimaraes, who was awarded an Honourable Mention in the ArtStation Wild West Challenge at the Keyframe Concept Art category. Ricardo's artwork was among several hundred entries, and in the top 8 best artists of the challenge! ArtStation is the showcase platform for games, film, media and entertainment artists.   • Amol Pavangadkar won the prestigious Balgandharva Parivar Puraskar (award) for exceptional service to the theatre, film and media arts
