NIH awards $3.1M to Developmental Speech Laboratory to study the impact of stuttering on children

Researchers in our Developmental Speech Laboratory have received a $3.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to launch the first large-scale, five-year study examining how stuttering affects children’s lives beyond speech.

Led by Bridget Walsh, associate professor in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, the longitudinal project will follow children who stutter, their parents and clinicians to identify personal and environmental factors that increase risk or provide protection against challenges such as decreased confidence, strained relationships and academic difficulties.

Findings are expected to improve early intervention, counseling and training for parents and speech-language pathologists and help tailor more effective, personalized support for children who stutter.
