A 2016 graduate of Michigan State University, Daniella Bruce is now an expert analyst in the field of sports broadcasting, providing commentary for both Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers games. Having grown up in the metro Detroit area, taking part in the history of these legendary local teams is particularly meaningful. “I love Michigan, I love the city of Detroit and could not be happier that I get to continue to call it home,” Bruce said.
The course to Bruce’s impressive career trajectory began at the College of Communication Arts and Sciences’ School of Journalism. Through her major, she was able to learn from and engage with leading professionals in the field, such as Detroit Tigers radio host Dan Dickerson, who reaffirmed her decision to pursue working in journalism. “You have a great voice for this,” he said. “Keep putting in the work, and you’ll have a bright future.”
During her undergraduate career, Bruce landed two internships which granted her practical exposure to the exciting and fast-paced world of sports broadcasting—first, with HOMTV in Okemos, then at ESPN headquarters. These experiences instilled foundational skills which Bruce has carried with her to this day.
Ahead of the opening of Little Caesar’s Arena in 2017, Bruce auditioned for the role of arena host and team reporter for the Detroit Red Wings, but instead was brought on to host their in-game pregame and intermission show. There, she applied the knowledge she had gained through her internships and coursework at MSU. Bruce also had the opportunity to work with Dan Dickerson, the reporter whose words had left a profound impact on her in university. She created content for social media and began hosting digital streaming shows, leveraging her skills in production and videography.
Bruce’s strong work ethic, talent, and versatility did not go unnoticed. By 2022, she found herself in the role of broadcast reporter, sharing commentary on Red Wings radio broadcasts. This experience led to her current position—TV broadcast reporter for the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers. She has continued to have a hand in the teams’ digital content creation, and she hosts all livestreamed events. As the first female color analyst for the Detroit Red Wings, her accomplishments are nothing short of historic.
While the field of sports broadcasting can be extremely competitive, Bruce can attest to the importance of perseverance in the face of rejection. “It wasn’t always easy, and I heard a lot of noes along the way, but I always knew the right opportunity would soon present itself. I am an example of the old cliché, ‘everything happens for a reason,’” she said.
