Hairong Li is a professor of advertising, a faculty associate of the Center for Business and Social Analytics, and an affiliated faculty member of the Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University.
His research covers the uses, effects, and implications of digital technology in advertising, communication, and marketing. He has published extensively; seven citation studies have ranked him a most published and cited scholar. In 2022, he received the Ivan Preston Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research, the most prestigious award of the American Academy of Advertising. His articles have appeared in many top journals, including the Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, International Journal of Advertising, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, New Media and Society, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Psychology and Marketing, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of International Business Studies, and Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. Dr. Li is a founding editor for the Journal of Interactive Advertising and an editorial board member for three major academic journals in the US and Europe. He was guest editor for the Journal of Advertising special issues on AI and advertising in 2019, big data in 2017, and advertising media audiences in 2006. He served as chair for the 2020 American Academy of Advertising (AAA) pre-conference on AI and advertising in San Diego, the 2017 AAA global conference session on digital analytics in Tokyo, the 2017 AAA pre-conference on computational advertising in Boston, the 2014 AAA pre-conference on big data for advertising research and education in Atlanta, and co-chair for the 2009 AAA Asia-Pacific conference in Beijing.
His professional experience also includes being a visiting professor at the City University of Hong Kong, executive director for Panmedia Institute, senior visiting scholar at Tsinghua University, invited speaker for the FTC mobile commerce town hall meeting, chair of AAA 2004 Publications Committee, and Fulbright Scholar at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He is a frequent speaker at academic conferences and trade forums in the US and overseas.
