Undergraduate Student Scholarships

All 2022 awards are to be used for Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 tuition and fees at the university and will appear on the recipient's fee receipt. Students interested in being considered for one or more of the scholarships listed below must complete the online application, available in Fall 2021:

The William J. Hopp Endowed Scholarship in Advertising

Congratulations to 2021-2022 recipient, Lauren Veldboom!

Awarded to one highly motivated and career-oriented advertising major, this tuition/fee scholarship is available for the 2022-2023 academic year. Mr. Tony Hopp, Michigan State University advertising alumnus and former chairman and CEO of Campbell Ewald, established this prestigious scholarship to honor his father, William J. Hopp, who encouraged him to pursue a career in advertising.  

The application process is open to current students who will be juniors or seniors in Fall 2022. May 2023 graduates are preferred applicants. Students graduating before May 2023 are not eligible. Note: This scholarship uses a special application process that is separate from the other departmental scholarships.

Nomination Guidelines/Format

Only students scheduled to graduate in May 2023 or later and who currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better are eligible to apply.

Richard E. Augenstein Public Relations Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipient, Alysa Kirn!

The Richard E. Augenstein Public Relations Scholarship is named for Mr. Richard Augenstein who received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956 from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. A Lansing resident, he was associated with the Michigan Manufacturers Association where he served as its vice president for government affairs.

The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior, majoring in public relations OR advertising with a public relations minor and/or is active in the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Public relations master’s students may also apply. The applicant should have a strong academic record. The application letter must clearly indicate interest and intention to pursue a career in public relations.


George Brown Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipient, Chanel Sheffer!

Every year, the Central Michigan Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (CMPRSA) awards the George Brown Memorial Scholarship to an outstanding PRSSA junior enrolled in a communication-related program of study at Michigan State University. This scholarship was established for Mr. George Brown, who was a charter member of the CMPRSA and a contemporary and great friend of Ned S. Hubbell, for whom the CMPRSA chapter is named. CMPRSA also selects an outstanding student practitioner from among the PRSSA ranks.

PRSSA members interested in the scholarship should fill out the application and submit a resume and at least two letters of recommendation for consideration. Writing and work samples are helpful, but not required.

Students are encouraged to nominate their peers for the outstanding practitioner award. PRSSA members are most aware of each other's accomplishments and can offer the best insight for the selection committee as to who is worthy of this award.

The person applying for the scholarship must:

  • Be a PRSSA member in the Ned S. Hubbell Chapter at MSU
  • Have junior standing at MSU by fall

Criteria used for selecting recipient:

  • Leadership in PRSSA and other student organizations
  • Commitment to the public relations field (professional development, education of others)
  • Academic Achievement

Decideware Advertising Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipients, Isabel Perhogan and Anarosa Sanchez!

This annual $10,000 scholarship fund is designed to recognize students enrolled in the Department of Advertising + Public Relations in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. Two students are selected and each awarded a $5,000 scholarship for the Fall 2022 semester.

E. Ross Gamble Scholarship

The E. Ross Gamble Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an MSU junior or senior majoring in advertising. Selection will be based on academic achievement and promise for success in the advertising profession. Preference will be shown to those having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better with financial need.


George Katsarelas Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipient, Jenna Grub!

The George Katsarelas Endowed Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a high-achieving advertising junior or senior pursuing a career in advertising. Applicants must demonstrate they have had practical experience and must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA. Financial need may be considered.

This scholarship is in memory of Mr. George Katsarelas, MSU alumnus and former executive creative director at Leo Burnett Detroit, Inc. Katsarelas was revered for his ability to lead, mentor and help his colleagues achieve greatness.


Mid-Michigan Creative Alliance Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipient, Nolan Wall!

The Mid-Michigan Creative Alliance Scholarship is awarded to an MSU junior or senior majoring in advertising creative. Selection will be based on financial need, academic achievement and promise for success in the advertising profession. Preference will be shown to those having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and financial need will be considered.


J. Christopher Preuss Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipients: Lillian Beckmeyer, Grace Cyporyn, Alexis Furkioti, Tessa Jazwinski, Abbey Leiffers, Joao Ardenghyschames and Noah Spungen!

The J. Christopher Preuss Scholarship is awarded sophomores, juniors or seniors in the Department of Advertising + Public Relations. This award was established to recognize Mr. Chris Preuss’s successful career in public relations. Preuss is an alumnus of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. He is executive vice president of Hill + Knowlton and works on the Ford account, focusing on global product communications plans, programs and storytelling. In 2011, Preuss was awarded the Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. Applicants should clearly define their professional goals in advertising or public relations; financial need may be considered.


Schalon Scholars Fund

Congratulations to 2021 recipients: Takeira Bridges, Conor Kilpatrick, Stephen Hawn, Carley Smith and Olivia Tantaro!

The Schalon Scholars Fund provides tuition support or support for internship experiences for juniors or seniors majoring in advertising and/or enrolled in the Department of Advertising + Public Relations. This scholarship is named in honor of the Schalon family, which includes Ms. Marcella Schalon and her daughter, Suz, an MSU advertising alumna. Students must include a brief essay describing previous and current volunteer commitments to nonprofit organizations, and how they intend to continue providing volunteer service after graduation.


Susan Brink Sherratt and Richard Sherratt Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipients: Trish Ha, Moriah Hartfield, Amber Higgins, Haley Richardson and Alayna Seaberg!

The Susan Brink Sherratt and Richard Sherratt Scholarship is given to advertising majors with financial need. This scholarship is named in honor of Ms. Susan Brink Sherratt, a proud third-generation Spartan who struggled finding a major until a friend recommended advertising. She thrived in the major and followed with a career in advertising.


Stan Stein Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipient, Kaitlyn Keele!

The Stan Stein Scholarship was established by alumnus Mr. Stan Stein and his employer, Weber Shandwick Worldwide, to help support deserving students as they prepare for a career in the public relations industry. Recipients are selected on the basis of professional goals related to public relations and financial need is considered. Preference is given to students who are majoring in public relations OR advertising with a public relations minor. Stein says he believes his comprehensive education at MSU and the College of Communication Arts and Sciences prepared him for his successful career. He wants to encourage graduates to give back appropriately to MSU, and remain connected to our great university.

Richard E. Augenstein Public Relations Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipient, Alysa Kirn!

Leo Burnett Graduate Scholarship

The Leo Burnett Graduate Scholarship is awarded to one or more advertising or public relations master's student(s) with serious plans for a career in an advertising agency. In the application letter, applicants must clearly designate that their chosen career is with an advertising agency (and more specifics, if possible) and why the student wishes to pursue that career path. Financial need is also a criterion for selection; applicants should document that on the application form and, if further details are appropriate, include them in the application letter. Selected recipient/s will have a chance to job shadow at the Leo Burnett Detroit location during the following academic year. Recipients are offered the opportunity for a job shadowing experience at LBD.


Marie Louise Gephart Donnell Scholarship

The Marie Louise Gephart Donnell Scholarship is awarded to outstanding media and information studies Ph.D. students in the Department of Advertising + Public Relations.

Ms. Donnell and her husband were both instructors at MSU and from 1960–1969, Ms. Donnell was a department chairperson. The fund was established to help defray the costs of higher education and to reward students for strong academic performance and professional achievements such as research and teaching excellence.


Janet L. Loria Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipients: Robyn Adams, Ava Francesca Battocchio, Nikki McClaran, Moldir Modagaliyeva, Iago Muraro, Leigh Anne Tiffany and Nan Zhang!

The Janet L. Loria Scholarship is awarded to one or more deserving advertising or public relations master's or media and information studies doctoral students.

Ms. Janet Loria served as a graduate secretary at MSU for many years, and was a friend and mentor to countless students. To honor her legacy, her family established an endowment to provide scholarships to students who have high academic achievement, have formulated career goals, and who volunteer to help others have a better life.


Bonnie B. Reece Graduate Scholarship

Congratulations to 2021 recipients: Melody Draeger and Sabrina Kohlmeier!

The Bonnie B. Reece Graduate Scholarship is awarded to a domestic advertising or public relations master's student who demonstrates academic excellence, financial need and leadership.

Dr. Reece is a former chairperson of the Department of Advertising + Public Relations and long-time faculty member who is devoted to high-quality graduate education. She wished to make life easier for one or two students each year by establishing this scholarship.
