Matt Davis, president of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences Alumni Advisory Board, and his wife, Kathleen Davis, have been named the first recipients of the Philanthropy Award from ComArtSci.
The award was presented at the college’s 2026 Celebration event this spring and marks the inaugural presentation of the honor.
The ComArtSci Philanthropy Award honors individuals who believe deeply in the college’s mission and demonstrate that commitment through meaningful philanthropic support. Recipients are recognized for creating opportunity, advancing education and research, and strengthening a community dedicated to shaping how people communicate and connect.
For the Davises, the recognition reflects both their leadership and their longstanding commitment to giving back.
“It has been an incredible privilege to serve the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and to give back to a place that has meant so much to us,” said Matt Davis. “Kathleen and I are proud to support students and help ensure the college continues its tradition of excellence for years to come.”
The couple has made significant investments in Michigan State University, with their philanthropy creating transformational impact across both the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine. They have also established endowments in both colleges to support future generations of students and programs.
Within ComArtSci, the R. Matt Davis Communication Excellence Fund provides flexible support for new and innovative initiatives, creating learning opportunities that prepare students for careers in a rapidly evolving communications landscape. At the MSU Veterinary Medical Center, the Mercedes Davis Fund, named in honor of their pet, supports specialized care for small animals.
Matt Davis, a 1986 graduate of the School of Journalism, has remained deeply connected to the college and currently serves as president of the Alumni Advisory Board.
Davis made his first gift to the university in 1988, contributing $7.50 as a recent graduate. That early act of giving marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to supporting future generations of Spartans.
“Matt and Kathleen represent the very best of ComArtSci,” said Dean Heidi Hennink-Kaminski. “Their leadership, generosity and belief in our mission continue to open doors for our students and strengthen the future of our college. Their impact will be felt for years to come.”
Davis has built a career in leadership, communications and public affairs, including executive roles at Dow and continued work in leadership development. He currently leads Driftwood Leadership and serves on multiple corporate boards.
Together, Matt and Kathleen Davis have demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting student success and advancing the mission of the college.
Through their generosity, the Davises are helping ensure that ComArtSci continues to provide world-class education, foster innovation and prepare the next generation of communication leaders.
