J-School students shine in NATAS Michigan Student Production Awards

Spartan journalists represented the J-School proudly in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Michigan Chapter Student Production Awards.

Focal Point News broadcasts took both awards in the Newscast category. Julian Stainback, Sam Britten, Joe Freihofer and Emily Towns are the 2022 Student Production Awards Winners for the March 12, 2021 broadcast. Stainback, Ian Gilmour, Molly Gundry and Hikaru Kudo won for the December 3, 2021 broadcast.

Spartans won all three awards in the News Report - Serious category. Gilmour's "Praying For Healing" entry was named the 2022 Student Production Awards winner. Regan Holgate won for "He's Been Gone Long Enough" while Katie Schroeder was honored for "Spartans Walk Alone."

Spartans also won each award in the News Report - Light News category. Freihofer's "Letters of Love" was chosen as the 2022 Student Production Awards winner. In addition, Holgate and Gilmour were honored for "A Peachy Reunion" while Britten won for "You Guys Are the Stars. You Just Make Me Shine, That's All."

The Public Affairs/Community Service category winners were all Spartans as well. The team of Dylan Gray, Rachel Goodman, Delany Rogers, Kayla Robinson, Brendan Burkhart and Rahmya Trewern was named the 2022 Student Production Awards winner for "Street Teams: Introducing the Army of Survivors." In addition, the team of Isabella Martin, Veronica Klingel, Keely Ziegler, Kelly Winters, Mollie Ropp and Adam Menting was honored for "Street Teams: Todd Martin Youth Leadership - Inspiring Youth to Serve." Britten also was recognized for "Nobody Likes Giving Their Child Bad News."

In the Sports Story or Segment category, Holgate and Gilmour were named 2022 Student Production Awards winner for "More Green in the Southeast." Gilmour was also recognized for "One Kick At A Time."

In the Sports program category, the trio of Holgate, Gilmour and Noah Hintz were named the 2022 Student Production Awards winners for the January 31 Spartan Sports Report entry.

The team of Gilmour, Holgate, Brendan Schabath and Olivia Santelli was the Student Production Awards winner in the Live Sporting Event / Game category for the MSU Men's Basketball vs. Ferris State entry.

Taylor Gattoni was the Student Production Awards winner in the Public Service Announcement category for "The Spartan Spit Kit." Matthias Copeland and Jessie Cohen won for "East Lansing COVID Shanty." In the Animation/Graphics/Special Effects category, Jeana Dee-Allen and Dylan Gray were the Student Production Awards winners for "Street Teams: Introducing the Army of Survivors."

Britten was also honored in the Editor category as the Student Production Awards winner for "You Guys Are the Stars. You Just Make Me Shine, That's All." In the Photographer category, Holgate was honored for "A New Twist in DeWitt" while Britten won for "You Guys Are the Stars. You Just Make Me Shine, That's All" and Martin won for "Hooked On Mullets."

Spartans took both awards in the Talent - News or Sports. Holgate was named the Student Production Awards winner for her 2021 Anchor Reel. Gilmour was honored for his talent reel.

In addition to the awards, Julian Stainback was awarded a Dr. Lynne Boyle/John Schimpf Scholarship through NATAS.
