Information Science Student Paves Career Path at Summer Internship

Information Science Senior Ally Tishler spent her summer getting hands-on IT experience as a Service Desk Intern at Greenstone Farm Credit Services.

On a typical day, Tishler spent time resolving and troubleshooting incoming technology issues or reassigning them to their appropriate team. Additionally, she worked on various projects that required collaborating with different departments.

“Since IT troubleshooting often involves trial and error rather than clear-cut solutions, it was challenging to receive direct instruction,” Tishler said. “To overcome this, I focused on observing my trainers closely. By watching how they handled issues and interacted with customers, I was able to pick up valuable skills and techniques without requiring constant guidance.”

One of Tishler’s biggest obstacles was learning her away around Windows devices, which presented challenges for her when customers came to her for help. She says this was a crucial learning experience for her to expand her skill set and learn the ins and outs of the system.

“One of the highlights of overcoming this challenge was receiving a Windows laptop as a gift from my managers after my final presentation,” Tishler said. “They had noticed my initial struggles and wanted to support my continued learning. “This gesture was incredibly thoughtful and has been invaluable in helping me further develop my skills with Windows devices.”

One of her favorite parts of the internship was the Camp Core Four event the company hosted at the beginning of the internship.  Members went on a field trip adventure visiting various clients, including two orchards and Boulder Ridge Zoo.

“It felt like a mini tour of Michigan's agricultural landscape while getting to personally meet a few of Green Stones' customers,” Tishler said.

While this internship was a great experience for Tishler, she learned that her future career path lies in something a little different.

“I thrive in roles that offer a creative outlet and variety, which aligns with my major’s focus on design and human research,” Tishler said. “While I loved my time at the internship and would gladly do it again, it has helped me pinpoint that my ideal career path involves a greater emphasis on innovation and design.”

Even though direct IT support isn’t the career path she hopes to have post-graduation, she learned a valuable skill that will help her succeed in her future.

“Once I began actively seeking explanations and guidance, I felt more comfortable and confident in my role," Tishler said. “Asking questions not only helps you understand your tasks better, but also ensures that you’re on the right track, which can boost your confidence and effectiveness.”
