MSU Foundation Professor Dimitar Deliyski, Ph.D., received the 2020 Best Paper Award in Clinical Medicine from the prestigious Journal of Voice. Deliyski, a pioneer and international leader in voice and speech disorders, is chair of the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at ComArtSci. The award-winning paper was led by Deliyski's former doctoral student, Maria Powell, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. Dr. Powell is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University.
Voted on by the editorial board of Journal of Voice, the annual awards honor excellence in voice research. The award recognizes Powell and Deliyski’s innovative and inter-institutional work in collaboration with Drs. Steven Zeitels, Robert Hillman, James Burns, Daryush Mehta, and Terri Gerlach of the Harvard Medical School, the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation, and the Charlotte Eye Ear Nose and Throat Associates.
The project focused on improving the clinical assessment of voice disorders. Their study evaluated the efficacy of two laryngeal imaging methods used to assess patient improvement after surgery to remove vocal cord lesions. The project was supported by Dr. Deliyski’s R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
