David Markowitz named Red Cedar Distinguished Professor

David Markowitz, associate professor in the Department of Communication in Michigan State University's College of Communication Arts and Sciences, has been named a Red Cedar Distinguished Professor, one of the university's highest honors recognizing faculty whose scholarly achievements elevate the stature and impact of MSU research.

The appointment, effective July 1, recognizes Markowitz's contributions to the study of language, technology and human behavior. His research examines how people communicate across digital environments and explores topics including deception, persuasion, artificial intelligence and social media.

In announcing the award, the Office of Research and Innovation and the Office of the Provost described Markowitz as "a remarkable scholar" whose research provides "a nuanced understanding of the relationship between modern information ecosystems and consumer perceptions." The award letter noted that his work addresses issues that are meaningful at both societal and individual levels and recognized him as a strong researcher, mentor and valued member of the academic community.

Since joining MSU in 2023, Markowitz has established a research program focused on understanding human behavior and psychological dynamics through language. Using computational approaches to analyze communication, his work investigates how people create, share and interpret information online and how emerging technologies are (re)shaping communication practices.

His scholarship has been published in leading journals across communication, psychology and interdisciplinary science. In addition to his research, Markowitz mentors students and prepares the next generation of scholars to address complex questions about communication and technology.

The Red Cedar Distinguished Professorship recognizes outstanding faculty members whose scholarly accomplishments bring distinction to Michigan State University and advance the university's research mission. Recipients join a select group of faculty recognized for excellence in research, mentorship and academic leadership. The honor also includes $15,000 annually for three years to support future research and creative activities.

"I'm profoundly grateful to the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, the Department of Communication and MSU for selecting me as a Red Cedar Distinguished Professor," Markowitz said. "I am especially thankful to those who have believed in my work and its ability to make a difference in society.

"I'm excited to use this honor to continue investigating how language patterns reveal critical psychological characteristics of the human condition, how people lie and detect lies, and how interpersonal connection happens between humans and non-humans. We live in a time where words, honesty and interpersonal connection matter more than ever, and I'm energized to keep pushing these research questions forward.”

"The Department of Communication and MSU are such important places to conduct this research because they give scholars the support and opportunities to tackle problems with impact. The Department of Communication asks, 'Why not?' instead of 'Why?,' making it an inspiring place to conduct meaningful empirical work."
