Communication leadership and strategy senior Kellen Porter strengthened his skills with a Carrier Sales Representative internship at Molo Solutions over the summer. Molo Solutions is a logistics company based in Chicago.
Part of Porter’s role included analyzing carrier performance metrics to identify areas for improvement, optimizing service efficiency and supporting sales and operational processes. He did this through preparing reports, coordinating shipments and assisting with logistics.
A big component of his role included managing and nurturing relationships with carriers, overseeing communications, addressing inquiries and ensuring high-quality service delivery.
“[I learned] how to converse with clients from all different walks of life, make a connection with them and create long lasting bonds,” Porter said.
In sales, not every call is going to be a success. That’s something Porter had to keep in mind when talking with customers.
“You're not always going to win,” Porter said. “But that doesn't mean that you shouldn’t give it your all when speaking with clients.”
Not only did he gain experience in his field, but Porter also figured out how to apply his internship to his post-graduate search.
“It has shown me what I want and don't want out of sales and what fields I will highly consider staying in,” Porter said. "I will apply those skills I learned this summer to that full time role.”
Porter didn’t just learn what it was like to work in sales; he learned how to show enthusiasm and stick out among other employees—no matter the career path.
“Ask questions that will make you stand out,” Porter said. “Be personable, yet professional. Show them that you want to work there and that you care about their culture and company values.”
