Bio

Kristy Piana Schena is the Founder and Executive Director of Kids On The Go, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free therapeutic and recreational programs for children and teens with special needs across southeastern and northern Michigan. Since founding the organization in 1999, Kristy has grown Kids On The Go into a vital community resource, expanding access to services for families who might otherwise go without care.

A graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts & Sciences, Kristy earned her B.A. in Audiology and Speech Sciences. She began her career as a speech-language pathologist, where firsthand experiences with families struggling to access therapy services inspired her to launch Kids On The Go. What started as a passion project has evolved into a lifelong mission focused on making therapy accessible to all.

Through her leadership, Kids On The Go has supported generations of children and families while also creating internship and volunteer opportunities for students. Kristy’s work has been widely recognized, including receiving the MSU ComArtSci Outstanding Alumni Award and the Grosse Pointe Chamber Excellence in Nonprofit Activity Award.

Kristy remains deeply connected to Michigan State as Chair of the Development Committee for the ComArtSci Alumni Board. She is passionate about giving back to the university that shaped her path, mentoring students, and helping create opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. She credits the Spartan network as a meaningful influence in both her professional and personal life.

In addition to her work with Kids On The Go, Kristy serves in leadership roles across several organizations, including SHARE Detroit, Regina High School, and the Special Needs Alliance Group. She is committed to building partnerships that strengthen communities and expand access to resources for those in need.

Kristy encourages students and young professionals to stay curious, build connections, and remain open to evolving career paths. “Don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself,” she shares. “Careers grow and change, and sometimes the most meaningful opportunities come from unexpected places.”

Outside of work, Kristy enjoys traveling, exploring new cultures, and connecting with fellow Spartans around the world. Kristy is always proud to represent Michigan State wherever she goes.
