Bio

Jiahui Liu is a PhD student in the Department of Media and Information. Her research focuses on AI companions, with an emphasis on the formation, dynamics, and consequences of intimate human-AI relationships. She integrates theories from interpersonal communication and computer-mediated communication to understand and design emerging human-machine interactions (e.g., Expectancy Violations Theory, Social Information Processing Theory, Hyperpersonal Model). Methodologically, her work primarily employs quantitative approaches, including experiments and surveys, as well as computational and mixed-method designs. She works with Dr. Robby Ratan.
