Elaine Kulhanek is an assistant instructor who works with Professor Eric Freedman and Capital News Service students in the editing lab.
CNS is a professional-level practicum in which students cover state government for more than 25 newspapers and online news outlets across Michigan.
Kulhanek earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from MSU in 1983 and spent a four-decade career as a reporter and editor in the USA Today Network/Gannett.
In that time, she worked at newspapers in Battle Creek, MI; Utica, NY; Sioux Falls, SD; Great Falls, MT; and Lansing, MI. She held positions ranging from reporter to executive editor.
Academically, she has been enrolled in the College of Communication Arts & Sciences' Master of Arts in strategic communication, which she expects to complete in December 2024. As part of that program, she has completed a graduate professional certificate in digital content and expects to complete a second certificate in analytics in December 2024.
