Yuxing Zhang

Yuxing Zhang is currently a Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Media and Information. Yuxing received a PhD from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information in 2025. Prior to joining MSU, Yuxing was the 2025–2026 An Wang Postdoctoral Fellow at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, Harvard University.

Yuxing is a media studies scholar whose work also spans platform studies, critical data studies, science and technology studies (STS), East Asian Studies, and AI ethics and design theories. Her research examines how platforms bridge various markets and how value is translated across the interfaces of the economy, sustainable development, and innovation culture. Yuxing pays specific attention to what—institutional arrangements, policy, innovation culture, and capital—drives the grafting of platform economies and digital capacities onto markets such as agrifood value chains and environmental management, and what implications this has for industry-chain structures, labor and knowledge, value frameworks, and cultural spheres as these industries become partially and often unevenly reconfigured. Her work has been published in leading journals, including Big Data & Society, Media, Culture & Society, Canadian Journal of Communication, Cultural Politics, and Roadsides.
