Bio

Hanjie Liu is a doctoral student in the Department of Media and Information. Her scholarly research interests lie in the areas of technological platforms, psychological wellbeing and mental disorders. Specifically, her research addresses how individuals with mental disorders use social media and how they differ in their consumption of online information on social media. She approaches this work from an empirical social science perspective, primarily using quantitative surveys and experimental designs. The primary aim of her research is to develop theoretical and practical knowledge regarding two challenges in technological platforms and cyberpsychology: first, how to better assist individuals with mental disorders in computer-mediated communications and, second, how to better understand roles that negative moods and emotions play in online message consumption.

Her work has appeared in the annual conferences of National Communication Association (NCA), Association of Educators of Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), International Conference on Research in Advertising (ICORIA), and Tobacco Regulatory Science Meeting (TRS). Prior to joining Michigan State, she received her M.A. in Mass Communication from Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at University of Minnesota.
