For most young adults, college is a time for exploration. But for Air National Guard member and journalism freshman Giselle Quintana, who also manages social media for the Student Veteran Resource Center, it’s a time to serve her country as well—balancing both worlds with dedication and gaining lessons that reach far beyond the classroom.
Inspired to Serve
Giselle Quintana joined the military not only to help fund her education but also to face new challenges. "I wanted to challenge myself both mentally and physically," she shares. "My Tia Pat inspired me to join the Air Force specifically." Following in her aunt’s footsteps, Giselle Quintana embarked on a journey that has pushed her to grow in unexpected ways, fostering a sense of resilience that prepared her for the demands of college life.
Confidence and Gratitude in College
Military service shaped Giselle Quintana's college experience from day one, instilling a strong sense of confidence and gratitude. "My experience in the military before college gave me the confidence to approach college knowing I can achieve anything I set my mind to," she explains. Having already navigated the challenges of living away from home, college felt like an opportunity rather than an obstacle.
The Air Force experience also helped Giselle Quintana approach her education with deep gratitude. "I’m grateful for the support I have back home and for the education I earned through hard work," she says. The path hasn’t always been easy, but the lessons learned along the way continue to guide her through every semester.
Expanding Career Goals
Initially set on a career in journalism, Giselle Quintana's role as an aerial porter in the Air Force opened new doors. "Before my military service, I was solely focused on becoming a news anchor or broadcast journalist," she recalls. "Now, I want to pursue journalism and public relations in both my civilian and military careers. Once I earn my degree, I also aim to commission as an officer."
This dual ambition has given Giselle Quintana a unique perspective, combining media expertise with firsthand experience in military operations—a skill set she believes will serve her well in both civilian and military spheres.
Military Values in Academic Life
The values of the Air Force—Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do—have become guiding principles for Giselle Quintana. "These are principles I live by in everything, from my schoolwork to interactions with classmates," she says. "The Air Force also taught me not to be afraid to take initiative and use my voice." These lessons shape the way she approaches college, encouraging her to lead with integrity and serve as a positive influence among her peers.
The Importance of Support Systems
For Giselle Quintana, balancing the demands of school and service would be nearly impossible without support. "The most important support has come from my family," she emphasizes. "I’m so grateful for their love and encouragement, both during my service and as I’ve left home for college." The Student Veteran Resource Center has also been a lifeline, providing a place to study, connect with fellow veterans, and get help with benefits. Giselle, a former participant in the MSU Ignite Summer Bridge Program, took a gap year to join the Air National Guard and stayed connected with the program upon returning to MSU.
Advice for Other Students Considering Military Service
Reflecting on her journey, Giselle Quintana has simple but powerful advice for students interested in the military. "Joining the military was the best decision I could have made after high school. I would say put a lot of thought into your decision because it’s a significant commitment. If you’re looking to challenge yourself, learn more about who you are, and be part of a strong community, it’s worth it."
The Meaning of Veterans Day
As a student and service member, Veterans Day holds special meaning for Giselle Quintana. "Veterans Day is about honoring all who have served and continue to serve," she says. "It’s a day to acknowledge and remember the sacrifices made to protect our country." For Giselle Quintana, it’s a moment to pause, reflect, and honor the path she’s chosen—a path that merges both academic and military pursuits, grounded in service and integrity.
Through her journey, Giselle Quintana reminds us that service and education are not separate pursuits; they are parallel paths that can build resilience, shape perspectives, and inspire future leaders.
