Joel Potrykus is an independent filmmaker and assistant instructor in the department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. His feature film work has screened at the Lincoln Center for the Arts, the MoMA, the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Cinémathèque Française in Paris, the Gartenbaukino in Vienna, and the Munich Film Museum. His latest film, Relaxer, made its world premiere at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival. Other feature films include The Alchemist Cookbook (2016), Buzzard (2014), and Ape (2012). Honors include Best New Director at the Locarno Film Festival, the FIPRESI Prize at the Ljubliana International Film Festival, Films en cours award at the Festival Belfort Entrevue in France, and his screenplay for Buzzard is part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science Permanent Collection. He’s been the subject of retrospectives at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Valdivia Film Festival in Chile, and the Black Canvas Film Festival in Mexico City.
