Dr. McCarty has acquired a broad base of knowledge and experience in the media, telecommunications and information industries. His research examines evolving media and communication ecosystems’ the ways in which new technologies are adopted by commercial and non-profit organizations and consumers in the context of legal-regulatory constraints. After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin and working in regulatory affairs for a telecommunications provider, he joined the faculty of the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State university. He left MSU for several years to lead the regulatory economics practice of a small telecom consulting firm. He returned to MSU to head the Media Management and Research program at MSU’s campus in Dubai. For the past few years, he has been teaching online courses for the department and working on online strategies for higher education. He has also taught video journalism and television production.
