Department of Communication and the Undergraduate Communication Association welcomes Communication alumnus Gary F. Stewart

Stewart_250x250.jpgGary Stewart’s career spans over 32 years managing communication in legislative, regulatory, news-media relations, crisis communication and large organization settings.  Gary also worked as a teacher of English, public speaking and theater in high school classrooms and taught communication courses while in graduate school at Michigan State University.  

In 2012, Gary retired from worldwide energy provider BP as General Manager of Government & Public Affairs – Midwest US, based in Chicago.  Gary’s work during 21 years at BP was both geographically and operationally varied.  In addition to representing refining, pipeline, biofuels and fuels-marketing operations in the Midwest, Gary led Public & Government Affairs for Amoco Eurasia Petroleum Company (now part of BP) in 1997-1998 with oil production activities in Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea.  In 2010, Gary served for several weeks as Public Information Officer in Unified Command in the Gulf of Mexico during the “Deepwater Horizon” oil-spill incident.  

Prior to joining BP, Gary was Director of State Government affairs for Detroit Edison Company (now DTE Energy) and supervised the company’s office in Lansing, Michigan.  He also served on the staff of the Michigan Senate during his time in Lansing. 

Gary holds BA and MA degrees in Communication from Michigan State University.  He resides with his wife, Susan Irish Stewart in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
